As a kids’ club owner, you’re used to dealing with bumps, bruises, and the occasional splinter. But what happens when the pain isn’t visible?

That’s where Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) comes in, a growing movement designed to equip youth-focused professionals with the tools to recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental health struggles in children and teens.

Next month, we’re joined on the In The Club podcast by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) facilitator Chris Grant to explore how YMHFA can transform emotional wellbeing in clubs. Meanwhile, this blog explains what YMHFA is, how it differs from traditional first aid, and practical ways to embed mental health awareness in your club with help from ClassForKids.

What is Youth Mental Health First Aid and How Can It Help Kids’ Clubs?

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) is training for adults who support children and other young people experiencing mental health challenges or crises. It’s not about making diagnoses or replacing professional therapy. Instead, it provides practical strategies to spot the signs early, respond appropriately, and help guide the young person towards professional support if needed.

Youth Mental Health First Aid vs. Traditional First Aid

When we think of first aid, we often picture ice packs, sticking plasters and even the iconic ‘blue roll’. Mental health first aid looks and feels very different, and that’s the point. While both aim to support wellbeing, they focus on very different types of care.

Traditional First Aid:

  • Focuses on physical health and injuries
  • Uses tools such as bandages, CPR and antiseptic
  • Aims for immediate, hands-on treatment
  • Requires practical and procedural skills

Youth Mental Health First Aid:

  • Focuses on emotional and psychological wellbeing
  • Uses tools like empathy, active listening and calm de-escalation
  • Aims for early intervention and referral to mental health professionals
  • Requires emotional intelligence and communication skills

In your kids’ club, both skillsets are critical. Physical safety is essential, but so is the ability to spot when a child is struggling internally. By embedding both approaches, you create an environment where children feel safe in every sense of the word.
